Sakamoto Days Story Overview
Taro Sakamoto was the greatest assassin of his era, the man villains dreaded and other hitmen looked up to. Then he fell in love. He retired, married, became a father and, somewhere along the way, put on a lot of weight.
Now he runs a small neighborhood store, and few customers would guess his past. His old world has not forgotten him, though. The series follows a retired legend trying to keep his family safe while former colleagues and new enemies keep showing up, which makes for a very different kind of action comedy.
Main Characters and Setting
Taro Sakamoto is a quiet, round shopkeeper who can still out-fight almost anyone, and his calm reactions to chaos are a big part of the humor. His wife and daughter are his reason for staying out of the killing business. The setting is ordinary Japan with a hidden underworld of hitmen living just out of sight.
Art Style and Format
Sakamoto Days is a Japanese manga by Yuto Suzuki, serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, and it reads in black and white on traditional pages, right to left. Suzuki’s fight scenes are known for clever choreography in which everyday objects become weapons. An anime adaptation premiered in 2025.
Content note: there is plenty of action violence, but it is mostly played for thrills and comedy.
Is Sakamoto Days Worth Reading?
Definitely, especially if you want action with a sense of humor. The gap between Sakamoto’s sleepy look and his skill never gets old, the fights are inventive, and the family angle gives the story warmth. It also works well as a first manga for new readers.
New readers can start at chapter one without any background. Early chapters work almost like short episodes, each introducing a new threat to the store, before longer story arcs and bigger fights take over.
